If a couple is trying to conceive for several months and they aren't successful, then many questions start arising in their minds especially in the females' minds. The nature of questions can vary but the main concern is whether or not she or the couple should consult a fertility specialist. There can be several factors that can result in delayed pregnancy. If there is a history of some severe genetic issues or diseases or on the other hand, there are some frequent miscarriages then it is highly advised to consult the fertility specialist immediately.

 

However, if the female is apparently healthy and has no major disease then there are few things are important to keep in mind before consulting with a fertility specialist.

 

Age of Female

 

If the female is under 35 and after the 1-year process of trying to conceive, still not successful then she should seek the consult of a specialist. The chances of conceiving decrease after the age of 35 and gets a minimum after 40. If the female is above 35 then after 6 months, she should seek the help of a specialist.  After 35, it is recommended that the male and female and partner both should consult with the specialist because the manager is also directly linked with the pregnancy. As the man gets older the sperm count decreases which can overall affect the whole process.

 

The process of conceiving becomes challenging after the age of 35 because of the change in the characteristic of the eggs as they are less likely to get fertilized by sperm or even if they get fertilized then the future process i-e implanting successfully in the uterus may not complete which can further result in miscarriage.

 

General Check-up

 

It is mandatory that before seeking the help of fertility specialists, undergo an overall health check-up by a family doctor or primary care doctor. Several other illnesses can lead to difficulty in pregnancy. It may not be only the result of any medical complication but can be due to lifestyle choices too such as excessive caffeine use, stress or poor diet. In addition to that, use urine ovulation prediction kits, do basal body temperature measurement. General health check-up can resolve some of the cases which are hindering the conceiving process.

 

Ovulation

 

Having irregular periods or another sort of imbalance in the hormone system can affect the ovulation period. The primary care physician will look upon other factors like you are having intercourse during fertile days, blood tests, ultrasonography, and hysterosalpingography (HSG).  In order to increase the chances of ovulation, women should keep track of their periods. Ovulation starts 14 days before the subsequent cycle. Further medications can be provided in order to enhance the process of ovulation. In case the test reports contain medical complications like fallopian tubes, abnormal uterus or even after inducing ovulation through medication during at least three cycles, then women should consult a fertility specialist.

 

Diabetes or such diseases transferred from genes can hinder the pregnancy. There can be many underlying reasons as there is a link between diabetes and obesity. Moreover, insulation related issues can occur.  One such issue is a polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) which can indirectly affect the quality of the egg. If there is such an issue, then the solution to this problem is fixating the hyperinsulinemia in order to enhance the quality of the egg. Diabetic patients need to control their blood sugar level well through any means either by exercise and proper diet or by seeking the help of the physician. If the complication still occurs, then consult the fertility specialist.

 

Ovarian Reserve Test

 

The chance of becoming pregnant is highly influenced by ovarian reserves. This reserve decreases gradually along with age. Therefore, it is necessary that the ovarian reserve test should be carried. Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) levels in the blood and transvaginal ultrasound measurement of the total antral follicle count (AFC) are the tests to undergo and if the reserve is less then immediately consult the specialist. The specialist may refer to in vitro fertilization to overcome the issue.

 

Besides that tests, Day 3 blood work will check that whether your reproductive hormones are functioning normally and the Hysterosalpingogram test which will check that whether uterus shaped normally and are your tubes open should be carried.

 

If any of the tests are not normal, then go to OBGYN or fertility specialist.

 

History of Miscarriages

 

If the woman has some miscarriages and then trying to conceive again then it is highly advised to see the fertility specialists. The miscarriages can occur due to some abnormalities and if not resolved can result in infertility.  The specialist will suggest the test and evaluate the results. Based on the evaluation precautions should be taken into consideration to reduce the risk in the next pregnancy. The abnormalities which occur in the miscarriages can vary from genetic to anatomical abnormalities. There can be some psychological reasons too such as some trauma which is overall affecting and complicating the process but in majority cases the reasons are physical, assisted with health issues or infections or some disease.

 

Body Mass Index Measurement

 

If the female is underweight or overweight, this could result in the complexity of pregnancy. In case if BMI is out of range, consult the specialist so that the adequate steps should be taken into consideration. Body Mass Index chart can be seen to accurately measure the weight height measurements. The lifestyle changes require to mitigate the complexity will be provided by the specialist. If this is the cause of infertility, then the recommended prescription given by the specialist can most probably resolve the issue.

 

Family History

 

If your mother others had early menopause i-e her menstruation cycle stopped before 40 then you should keep that in mind and should refer to the specialist before time.

 

Abdominal Surgery

In case, if the female has undergone previously through some abdominal surgery then it can cause complications in the further process. In that case, the female should seek the help of a specialist. Such abdominal surgeries can include Endometriosis. In such a case, the tissues inside of the uterus grow on ovaries, fallopian tubes, or on the outside surface of your uterus. The heavy, painful periods are the result of this.

 

Thyroid issues

 

The miscarriages and infertility issues can be tied upon behind the problem of abnormal thyroid functioning. Thyroid has a direct relation with hormones and can cause hormonal imbalance which can complicate the process of pregnancy. Therefore, if you have such an issue immediately consult the doctor.

 

The hormone balance, the right ovulation, functioning ureters and no blockage in the fallopian tubes, regular periods all the facts are necessary to consider in case of difficulty in getting pregnant. The initial test which needs to be carried out is the physical examination, Pelvic and genital examination, BMI test, breast examination, blood tests and smear test which will check for any infection or abnormality on your cervix.

 

In general, these can be some of the factors which should be considered.
